The inverter is the bridge between the DC array and the AC grid/load. It performs conversion, monitoring, and (in many systems) safety functions.

Common types

  • String inverters: one inverter for one or more strings (often with multiple MPPT inputs).
  • Microinverters: one inverter per module.
  • DC optimizers: module-level electronics paired with a central inverter (varies by design).

Key ideas

  • MPPT (maximum power point tracking) adjusts operating point to maximize power.
  • Anti-islanding protects lineworkers by stopping export when grid is down (conceptual).
