Letter ण (na-r) (Topic 5) in Module 4 – Hindi-Letters (BG)

— Letter (na-r)

  • Closest English sound anchor: nut with the tongue slightly curled back
nut
  • Hindi teaching syllable: णा ('naa')
णा

The retroflex group should feel farther back in the mouth than the dental group.

Half Letter ् (na-r halant)

In Hindi, adding the virama (्) below ण creates the half letter ण् — it silences the inherent 'a' vowel and makes this consonant join the next one without a vowel between them. Ways to write the half letter: 1. Halant form: ण्   (the virama ् appears below the full letter)2. Conjunct form: When ण् is followed by another consonant, the two letters merge visually into a conjunct (e.g. ण्क = ण्क). Some conjuncts develop unique shapes; these are learned as whole units. Example words using ण्: - कण्ठ ('kanth') — Throat - वण्य ('vanya') — Wild / Forest (rare) - पण्य ('panya') — Merchandise / Goods - गण्य ('ganya') — Countable / Notable - तृण् ('trin') — Grass / Blade of grass
