Start by learning the independent vowels: ಅ ಆ ಇ ಈ ಉ ಊ ಋ ಎ ಏ ಐ ಒ ಓ ಔ plus the signs ಅಂ and ಅಃ. A distinctive feature of Kannada is that it has two 'e' sounds (short ಎ, long ಏ) and two 'o' sounds (short ಒ, long ಓ) — unlike Hindi or English.
