Letter ह (ha) (Topic 4) in Module 8 – Hindi-Letters (BG)

— Letter (ha)

  • English sound anchor: hat
hat
  • Hindi words:
  • हवा ('hawa') — Wind / Air / Breeze
  • हाथ ('haath') — Hand
  • हाथी ('haathi') — Elephant
  • हँसना ('hansna') — To laugh / Smile
  • होश ('hosh') — Consciousness / Senses

Half Letter ् (ha halant)

In Hindi, adding the virama (्) below ह creates the half letter ह् — it silences the inherent 'a' vowel and makes this consonant join the next one without a vowel between them. Ways to write the half letter: 1. Halant form: ह्   (the virama ् appears below the full letter)2. Conjunct form: When ह् is followed by another consonant, the two letters merge visually into a conjunct (e.g. ह्क = ह्क). Some conjuncts develop unique shapes; these are learned as whole units. Example words using ह्: - ब्रह्म ('brahm') — Brahma / Universal spirit - चह्नी ('chahni') — Sieve (regional) - वह्नि ('vahni') — Fire (Sanskrit) - मह्लत ('mahlat') — Delay / Respite (Urdu-Hindi) - ह्रास ('hraas') — Decline / Decrease
