Letter ष (ssa) (Topic 2) in Module 8 – Hindi-Letters (BG)

— Letter (ssa)

  • English sound anchor: sh (tongue curled back — retroflex sh)
sh(back)
  • Hindi words:
  • षट् ('shat') — Six (formal/archaic)
  • षड्यंत्र ('shadyantra') — Conspiracy
  • षोडश ('shodash') — Sixteen (classical)
  • षट्कोण ('shatkona') — Hexagon
  • षट्पदी ('shatpadi') — Sestet / Six-line verse

Note: ष is rare in everyday Hindi and appears mainly in Sanskrit-origin words.

Half Letter ् (ssa halant)

In Hindi, adding the virama (्) below ष creates the half letter ष् — it silences the inherent 'a' vowel and makes this consonant join the next one without a vowel between them. Ways to write the half letter: 1. Halant form: ष्   (the virama ् appears below the full letter)2. Conjunct form: When ष् is followed by another consonant, the two letters merge visually into a conjunct (e.g. ष्क = ष्क). Some conjuncts develop unique shapes; these are learned as whole units. Example words using ष्: - कष्ट ('kasht') — Hardship / Trouble - दुष्ट ('dusht') — Wicked / Evil - स्पष्ट ('spasht') — Clear / Evident - वर्षा ('varsha') — Rain - तृष्णा ('trishna') — Craving / Thirst
