Protecting Your Professional Judgment

The Automation Complacency Risk

Research on pilots, radiologists, and other professionals using automation reveals a consistent pattern: when we delegate tasks to machines, we become less practiced at doing those tasks ourselves. Over-reliance on AI creates automation complacency — decreasing alertness, atrophying skills, and reduced ability to catch errors.

For professionals, this risk is real. If you delegate all your writing to AI, your own writing skills atrophy. If you never form independent analytical opinions before asking AI, you lose the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated analysis. If you stop learning a domain because AI can answer questions in it, you lose the contextual depth needed to know when AI is wrong.

The 'Brilliant Friend' Mental Model

One useful frame: treat AI as a brilliant but sometimes unreliable friend who happens to know a lot about many subjects. You'd listen to their input seriously, but you wouldn't commit to a major decision based on what they said without doing your own thinking.

The professionals getting the most from AI are not the ones who use it most — they are the ones who use it most strategically. They use AI to handle tasks below their professional ceiling (formatting, first drafts, research orientation) and preserve human judgment for tasks at and above that ceiling.
