What happens after you submit, why you see Awaiting Review, and when you can retake or download a certificate
Grading depends on the questions in your attempt:
Multiple-choice and other exact-match items are graded instantly when you submit.
Long answers that have a reference answer and Allow automatic AI grading enabled are graded by AI shortly after submission.
Other written answers wait for your educator to score them. Empty written answers are auto-scored 0 at submission and never enter the review queue.
While your attempt is waiting for educator scoring, you will not see percentage, pass/fail, or per-question marks. Those results unlock only after the educator finishes scoring and the attempt status becomes scored. Educator feedback appears at the same time as your grades.
While any of your attempts for that assessment awaits review, starting a new attempt is blocked for everyone — including course owners and admins. After scoring is complete, the normal attempt limit applies again (default maximum is 3). In-progress, submitted, and scored attempts count toward the limit; expired attempts do not.
You can track a pending or completed attempt in these places:
Shows an Awaiting Review badge until grades unlock.
Logged-in home lists a Pending grading entry for attempts still under review.
Your attempt history shows Awaiting review for submitted attempts that are not scored yet.
Pending certificate rows also show Awaiting Review until scoring finishes.
When scoring finishes, a certificate may be awarded automatically if the assessment’s certification award mode is automatic and you passed. Otherwise your educator awards it manually when completing scoring (or later from the score page). Download the PDF from Settings → Certificates using the Download PDF button.
