Roof Assessment Basics (Topic 3) in Module 4 – Solar-PV-NABCEP-Associate (BG)

Roof Assessment Basics

A safe and successful PV install starts with a basic roof evaluation. PV Associate prep focuses on concepts rather than engineering calculations.

What installers commonly look for

  • Roof type and condition (shingles, membrane, metal, etc.)
  • Usable area, setbacks, and obstructions
  • Roof penetrations and waterproofing considerations
  • Access paths for workers and materials
  • Structural concerns to escalate (sagging, rot, damaged framing)

If you see concerning conditions, escalate to the appropriate expert (supervisor/engineer/roofer) rather than guessing.
