Fricatives (F, V, S, Z, SH, H) (Topic 2) in Module 1 – English-Pronunciation (BG)

Fricatives

Fricatives make sound by narrowing airflow (friction). Some come in voiceless/voiced pairs:

  • /f/ vs /v/ (lip + teeth)
  • /s/ vs /z/ (tongue near the ridge behind teeth)

/ʃ/ (SH) is a “deeper” friction sound, and /h/ is a breathy sound made in the throat. Keep the sound steady—avoid stopping it like a /t/ or /d/.
